Through preserved buildings, memorials, first-person narratives, and powerful art installations, visitors are invited to confront the realities of slavery and its lasting impact on American history. Whitney Plantation serves as a place of education, remembrance, and reflection—honoring those whose stories were long ignored and ensuring they are never forgotten.
Explore Oak Alley Plantation
Oak Alley Plantation, a National Historic Landmark. This historic site is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history its inhabitants left behind. With an emphasis on its time as a working sugarcane plantation, visitors are invited to experience the exhibits, walk under the iconic Allée, interact with staff, and leave with a richer, more powerful understanding of this plantation’s history.
During your visit to Oak Alley, you will tour the “Big House” exhibit and learn about life inside the “Big House.” (The 2nd floor portion of the visit is provided on video for visitors who are mobility challenged). Visitors are then able to explore other exhibits and points of interest, self-paced, including the Slavery at Oak Alley exhibit, Sugarcane Theater, and People of Oak Alley, just to name a few. Adjacent to the historic site are Oak Alley Restaurant, a gift shop, and a cafe.
Laura Plantation: Creole Heritage & Untold Stories
Step into 200 years of Louisiana Creole history at Laura Plantation, a uniquely preserved sugar plantation just outside New Orleans. Known for its vibrant architecture and honest storytelling, Laura offers guided tours rooted in first-person accounts — including the powerful narratives of enslaved people who lived and worked on the property. This woman-owned, family-run site provides an essential, eye-opening look at plantation life through a Creole perspective.
